Rock in Rio Lisboa Festival

The stage at Rock in Rio Lisboa

a-ha were in Lisbon yesterday to play at the Rock in Rio Lisboa Festival – their first ever concert in Portugal. And with 70,000 people in the audience, it was the largest show of the current tour.

“Thank you very much for inviting us to this beautiful city today! It’s a great honour to be here”, Magne greeted the Portuguese audience.

Going into stadium-mode they did a focused and excellent performance, creating some stellar moments along the way. A week off since the concerts in Norway seemed to have worked wonders, and Morten’s voice now sounded much better.

They were joined on stage by Anneli Drecker, who has been with them on tour since Bergen on June 15th, doing backing vocals. She last toured with a-ha in 2016.

Before “Crying In The Rain”, Magne talked about the shooting tragedy that had occured in Oslo on Friday night:

“It was a sad day in Norway today, where some stupid terrorist started shooting people because they dare to be different. And I just want to say that we stand together with the right for everyone to decide how to express themselves. And I want to dedicate this next song to the victims.”

The setlist was the same as the festivals in Norway, only replacing “Scoundrel Days” with “Train of Thought”. There was a live stream and TV broadcast of the concert in certain areas, which has been uploaded to YouTube in full HD.

Paul has also posted some video clips from last night on Instagram, filmed from the audience by his son Augie.

a-ha aiming for Portugal (again)

a-ha were supposed to perform at Rock in Rio Lisboa in Portugal this summer, but the festival had to be cancelled due to Covid-19.

The organizers are trying again next year, and a-ha have now once again been confirmed to be headlining together with Duran Duran on 26 June 2021.

This will be the very first time a-ha perform live in Portugal. The Rock in Rio spin-off festival in Lisbon has been held every other year since 2004, and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with an attendance of around 350,000 people.

Tickets are on sale now, while tickets already bought for this year’s festival are still valid for 2021.

A total of 38 a-ha concerts are currently planned for 2021.

Rock in Rio Lisboa performance cancelled

Only six weeks after the announcement that a-ha would performing at this year’s Rock in Rio Lisboa in Portugal on 27 June, the festival organizers have decided to cancel this year’s event and postpone it to June 2021 instead. This is because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which will probably have an impact on live concerts and other public events for a long time to come.

Tickets already purchased will remain valid for the 2021 festival, but it remains to be seen if a-ha will still be part of the lineup next year.

This means the next a-ha dates scheduled will now be the South American tour after the summer, starting in Lima, Peru on 1 September 2020.

Rock in Rio Lisboa has announced that a-ha will be performing at the festival on 27 June 2020. This will be the very first time a-ha perform live in Portugal.

The Rock in Rio spin-off festival has been held every other year since 2004, and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with an attendance of around 350,000 people.

Also performing on the same day will be Duran Duran, Xutos & Pontapés and Bush.

For some reason Duran Duran are headlining, although it could be argued that a-ha have been more successfull in Europe in recent years, both in the charts and as a touring act.
