Apparatjik and a-ha comics in the making

A page from the Apparatjik comic book

Award-winning British comic book artist Mike Perkins has created a new comic about Apparatjik, which will be used in connection with upcoming Apparatjik concerts.

“It’s in black and white and fairly short, but I’ve shown it to Magne Furuholmen, who liked it. It will be published in concert folders in connection with upcoming Apparatjik concerts. Later on, it will be available in other media as well”, Perkins says.

Perkins, known for his work on Captain America and Stephen King’s The Stand, was in Bergen at the Raptus Comics Festival last weekend. In an interview with Aftenposten he says that he’s also planning a comic about a-ha’s Scoundrel Days album:

“For a long time I’ve wanted to turn Scoundrel Days into a comic book. It’s the darkest and most melancholic of a-ha’s albums, and I was a big fan of it when it was released in the fall of 1986.

The title track immediately caught my imagination, and gives me hints to manipulative politicians and things like that. There’s a certain film noir feeling to it, which can also be seen in the music videos, for example in “I’ve Been Losing You” which includes the line “The gun on the bedside table”.

I’m hoping to do Scoundrel Days in noir-style with limited use of colours. I would also want to use several of the music videos as inspiration, plus songs from other a-ha albums like Hunting High and Low and more recent songs like “Butterfly, Butterfly”. In the “Hunting High and Low” music video, Morten Harket transforms into a whale, a dolphin and finally a wolf [sic]. This is also something I’d want to incorporate into the comic book.

The main characters will be humans with the ability to transform into animals and jump to parallel worlds.”

Magne Furuholmen says that he’s all positive to a-ha songs being turned into a comic book:

“I think this is really exciting, and I can’t imagine the others in the band being negative to it. I have never been a comic book nerd myself, but I did read comics as a kid, like everyone else, and I have seen some of his previous work. He is very skilled and it will be interesting to see what he can come up with.”

– What do you think about an album living on in other art forms?

“This will be like a reinterpretation of something we’ve done. Having one expression living on in a different form is exciting. There’s something good about having created something that triggers someone else’s imagination in ways we couldn’t have originally envisioned”, Magne tells Aftenposten.

Apparatjik to perform in Austria

Apparatjik have announced that they are playing a concert at the Steirischer Herbst Festival of new art in Graz, Austria on October 15th.

The festival’s website is available in English here.

Magne is also planning new solo exhibitions this fall. At the workshop in Halle last month he told a fan that there will be an exhibition in Oslo, followed by one in London. Sometime between September and November, but the exact dates had not been set.

The retrospective art book Magne Furuholmen – In Transit, which was originally to be published on May 31st, now has September 6th as a new publication date (in Norway) – possibly to coincide with the upcoming exhibition.

Magne and fellow Apparatjik member Jonas Bjerre are in Germany this week, to hold a workshop for art students at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in the city of Halle.

The workshop started on Monday, May 23rd, and will continue throughout the rest of this week.

The idea is apparently to create new objects by using auto parts from a Smart car – continuing Apparatjik’s ongoing collaboration with the German car manufacturer.

Daily updates from the workshop project can be found here.

There was also recently an Apparatjik workshop in Moscow, following their concert there on May 13th. Here is some info from the Strelka Institute website:

After the performance at Strelka, Apparatjik will lead a closed workshop with Russian artists and musicians. Together they will work on a new interactive installation, which will connect Apparatjik’s creative work with local Russian context. The results of this collaboration will be shown at the Yota Space Festival in St. Petersburg this fall.

Apparatjik played their first concert in Russia this Friday, May 13th, at the newly established Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow.

There were initially only 200 invitations available for two people each, by registering on the Strelka website, but this week anyone who added their name to the event on Apparatjik’s Facebook page were automatically added to the guestlist (which ended up being 188 people). So there must have been at least 600 people in the audience (a Russian fan claims there were as many as 1500-2000 people).

A selection of pictures from the Moscow performance can be seen here.

And here are some YouTube clips:

Simen and Peder from Moods of Norway accompanied the other apparatjiks on the trip to Moscow, and a couple of pictures have been posted on their Facebook page, including one with Magne and Karl Oluf Wennerberg in front of the Bolshoi Theatre.

Apparatjik wrapped up their project at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin with two performances on March 26th and 27th.

The culture programme Nasjonalgalleriet on NRK2 in Norway had a report about Apparatjik’s Berlin project in tonight’s broadcast, with comments from all four band members and the director of the gallery.

The report can be seen on NRK’s web-TV.

For more footage from Berlin, check out two videos on vimeo.com here and here, plus a German TV-report from RBB on YouTube here.

Apparatjik also appeared on NRK1 last week, in a documentary about the small village of Flø, where they performed as part of the “Go with the Flø”-festival in June last year.

The documentary can be seen here. Magne and Apparatjik appear between 5:20 – 6:00 minutes and 22:00 – 27:30 minutes.

Apparatjik’s latest single “Combat Disco Music” is now available on iTunes and in the Apparatjik online store.

Apparatjik opened their Light Space Modulator project at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin this past weekend with a performance on Saturday that included a couple of new songs.

To promote this month’s events the band has teamed up with Smart to create a unique discoball electric car, covered by thousands of mirror pieces. In the YouTube video above, Magne can be seen driving around Berlin in the car. He also provides the vocals on the accompanying “Combat Disco” track.

More info about the collaboration with Smart can be found in an article on the New York Times website:

Magne has also done some new interviews in connection with the Berlin installation/performances:

Monopol Magazin: Apparatjik – Vier gegen Mies (German)

A few YouTube videos from Saturday’s performance can be seen here. And a Danish company that delivered the sound equipment for the cube has posted some pictures of the rigging here.

The Apparatjik Light Space Modulator continues this month, with new performances planned on March 26th and March 27th – the latter in collaboration with the Deutsches Kammerorchester. “I will be conducting the orchestra together with the others in Apparatjik, and that’s something I’ve never done before“, Magne tells VG.

Apparatjik in Frankfurt

Prior to appearing at the Spellemann Awards on Saturday, Magne spent some time in Frankfurt, Germany with Apparatjik.

On 25 February they performed at the opening ceremony of the newly renovated Deutsche Bank towers, now “one of the most eco-friendly high-rise buildings in the world”.

3 songs from this performance can be seen on YouTube:
Arrow and Bow   Snow Crystals   Look Kids

There was also an English interview with Magne in the Deutsche Bank ArtMag, with his (written) answers being delivered in typical Apparatjik style.

Then last week, from 2 – 4 March, there was an “Apparatjik Mini Summit” at the Deutsche Bank towers, as part of the “Globe” series of artistic events. Featuring film screenings, discussions and so-called “Apparatjik iPad Disco Combats”, these evenings were free and open to everyone interested.

To get an impression of the iPad Combat, check out this video. For additional pictures and video links from Frankfurt, there’s a thread on the WOTM forum with more info.

Magne is now in Berlin, where he’s preparing the Apparatjik Light Space Modulator – the art installation and performance project at the Neue Nationalgalerie that opens on Saturday, March 12th.

Apparatjik announce Berlin performances

Magne and the rest of Apparatjik will do 3 concerts/performances in Berlin in March, once again using their specially constructed cube.

This was announced in a news bulletin on apparatjik.com today.

The performances will all be held at the city’s Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery), and the dates are:

Saturday 12. March
Saturday 26. March
Sunday 27. March

Tickets go on sale tomorrow at theoutland.com.

Apparatjik have previously only done 3 concerts; in Berlin, Flø and London – all in 2010.

Update: A press release that has been published on a-ha.com and Magne’s MySpace page provides more details about The Apparatjik Light Space Modulator.

In addition to the three performances, there will be an exhibition from 13 to 27 March.
And the last performance on the 27th will be performed in collaboration with the Deutsches Kammerorchester.

Update #2: Apparatjik are also inviting their fans to take part in the project, by submitting images that may be used in a slide-show projected onto the cube. More details here.

The four members of Apparatjik held their second ever concert/art-performance as part of Hugo Opdal’s “Go with the Flø” art festival on Friday, June 5th.

We are four musicians who perform and create things together within a short period of time. It may sound like a concert, but we view it more as a discussion forum“, Magne told TV2’s evening news.

The concert had been criticized in the local press beforehand, because of the steep ticket prices; 2000 Kroner ($309) per ticket. And according to Sunnmørsposten, not a single ticket was sold in advance (although Hugo Opdal claimed he had sold 20 tickets on Facebook). But the sales picked up when the price was lowered to 1000 Kroner shortly before the concert. Many local people at Flø and random people visiting were also allowed to enter for free, to fill up the venue.

Apparatjik also launched their “Bolshevik Box” at Flø – a limited edition box set containing a CD, DVD, 12″ vinyl record and one of eight art prints. The Apparatjik prints were also exhibited on the walls of Hugo Opdal’s gallery.

An NRK news report about the art festival can be seen at NRK.no. There are some screenshots on the WOTM forum.

Moods of Norway has some pictures of the guys on Facebook.

And the latest clip in a series of Apparatjik video podcasts, this time featuring a heavily-distorted Magne, is now available here.

Apparatjik on Lydverket

Last night, Lydverket on NRK1 had a report about Apparatjik’s recent concert in Berlin. The whole video clip can be seen on Lydverket’s website here.

The whole idea of Apparatjik is that we are four professional people who approach the project with the spirit of an amateur. We all make videos, we all make music, we all sing. There is a good intensity and energy that emerges when we are able to get together“, Magne tells Lydverket’s reporter.
