Magne pays tribute to Harald Zwart

The Norwegian director Harald Zwart, who has made movies such as One Night at McCool’s and The Karate Kid, was the main guest on the talkshow Litt Av Et Liv on NRK1 tonight.

a-ha fans also know him as the director of the “Velvet” and “Forever Not Yours” music videos.

In addition to having friends and family of Zwart in the studio, the show also included several video greetings from people he has worked with, such as Michael Douglas, Steve Martin, John Cleese
– and Magne Furuholmen.

 
Here’s what Magne had to say:

“Hi Harald. Congratulations on all your amazing success. In many ways you are the film industry’s equivalent to a-ha; a Norwegian with success abroad. You are also similar to us in that you just keep getting better and better with time. So I’m happy to see that you are succeeding, which I never really doubted you would.

We have worked together on a few occasions, we have been to Cuba together and you have also made what is possibly a-ha’s most controversial music video…in a freezing morgue in Hamburg. And each time we have worked with you has been a very enjoyable experience.

I am sure that you will keep making even greater things in the years to come and make a lot of people happy with the things you do. You have the guts, you are skilled and you are fearless. And you also have a great wife to support you – just like I have. So then you’re all set.”

Apparatjik on NRK2

Apparatjik wrapped up their project at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin with two performances on March 26th and 27th.

The culture programme Nasjonalgalleriet on NRK2 in Norway had a report about Apparatjik’s Berlin project in tonight’s broadcast, with comments from all four band members and the director of the gallery.

Apparatjik also appeared on NRK1 last week, in a documentary about the small village of Flø, where they performed as part of the “Go with the Flø”-festival in June last year.

LiveIN magazine interview

Magne is interviewed in the spring 2011 edition of the free trend magazine LiveIN Asker, where he talks about moving into his new atelier at Galleri Trafo:

“From having my own atelier at home at Nesøya and being able to use it whenever I want, it’s obviously a transition moving into Galleri Trafo. But my hope is that Trafo will be a dynamic and active place to be, with lots of exciting art projects in every corner of the building.”

Magne has rented two rooms in the gallery. One will be his private atelier and working space, while the second room will be used for other activities of his choosing.

“I’m planning to involve other artists through collaborations or joint projects eventually. It was very inspiring to visit Olafur Eliasson in Berlin recently, and see how he has organized his “Institut Für Raumexperimente”. A school operating as a workshop, where he collaborates with students and artists on different projects, and which is also used as a forum for exchanging ideas from different viewpoints.”

Asked how 2011 is shaping up to be, Magne says:

“Much more hectic than I had thought, but according to my wife that’s something I’ve been saying every year since we got together in 1980.”

The Apparatjik Light Space Modulator opens in Berlin

Apparatjik opened their Light Space Modulator project at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin this past weekend with a performance on Saturday that included a couple of new songs.

To promote this month’s events the band has teamed up with Smart to create a unique discoball electric car, covered by thousands of mirror pieces. In the YouTube video above, Magne can be seen driving around Berlin in the car. He also provides the vocals on the accompanying “Combat Disco” track.

The Apparatjik Light Space Modulator continues this month, with new performances planned on March 26th and March 27th – the latter in collaboration with the Deutsches Kammerorchester. “I will be conducting the orchestra together with the others in Apparatjik, and that’s something I’ve never done before“, Magne tells VG.

Apparatjik in Frankfurt

Prior to appearing at the Spellemann Awards on Saturday, Magne spent some time in Frankfurt, Germany with Apparatjik.

On 25 February they performed at the opening ceremony of the newly renovated Deutsche Bank towers, now “one of the most eco-friendly high-rise buildings in the world”.

There was also an English interview with Magne in the Deutsche Bank ArtMag, with his (written) answers being delivered in typical Apparatjik style.

 

Then last week, from 2 – 4 March, there was an “Apparatjik Mini Summit” at the Deutsche Bank towers, as part of the “Globe” series of artistic events. Featuring film screenings, discussions and so-called “Apparatjik iPad Disco Combats”, these evenings were free and open to everyone interested.

Magne is now in Berlin, where he’s preparing the Apparatjik Light Space Modulator – the art installation and performance project at the Neue Nationalgalerie that opens on Saturday, March 12th.

Magne donates artwork to charity auction

Aftenposten has an interview with Magne today, in connection with a new campaign by LHL (The Norwegian Heart and Lung Patient Organization). He is among a number of artists who have donated artworks for an online auction to benefit research on heart disease among women.

Magne himself has been suffering from atrial fibrillation for a number of years, and is scheduled to undergo heart surgery this summer.

“So it’s natural for me to contribute to a campaign like this“, he says.

Magne has recently been busy moving into his new atelier at Galleri Trafo in Asker, and in the process he’s had a chance to go through a lot of his older paintings, graphic prints and ceramic art.

The monotype that he’s donated to the charity auction is from a series of prints that he made around 2000, where the motif somewhat resembles a heart against a background of electrical charges.

“Shortly afterwards I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation“, Magne says.

“It was almost a bit eerie. These prints were made right before my own heart problems were discovered. Yes, it does resemble a heart muscle. I had, perhaps, an underlying feeling in my body, which caused this to materialize.”

The monotypes were exhibited only once, but were not available to buy. Now Magne has brought them out of storage.

“This print does fit very well, considering my personal connection to heart problems“, he says.

The charity auction is now underway at the website of auction house Blomquist. Magne’s monotype is available here, with a starting price of 30 000 kroner. The auction is open until February 28th.

Apparatjik announce Berlin performances

Magne and the rest of Apparatjik will do 3 concerts/performances in Berlin in March, once again using their specially constructed cube.

This was announced in a news bulletin on apparatjik.com today.

The performances will all be held at the city’s Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery), and the dates are:

Saturday 12. March
Saturday 26. March
Sunday 27. March

Tickets go on sale tomorrow at theoutland.com.

Apparatjik have previously only done 3 concerts; in Berlin, Flø and London – all in 2010.

Update: A press release that has been published on a-ha.com and Magne’s MySpace page provides more details about The Apparatjik Light Space Modulator.

In addition to the three performances, there will be an exhibition from 13 to 27 March.
And the last performance on the 27th will be performed in collaboration with the Deutsches Kammerorchester.

Update #2: Apparatjik are also inviting their fans to take part in the project, by submitting images that may be used in a slide-show projected onto the cube. More details here.

På jakt etter paradiset DVD release

The 4-part documentary series På jakt etter paradiset, which was broadcast on NRK 1 in 2008, has now been released on DVD in Norway.

Revealing new details about the fascinating life of adventurer Thor Heyerdahl (1914 – 2002), the series received very good reviews when it first aired on TV.

In addition to classical pieces by composers like Grieg, Tveitt and Sibelius, the four 50-minute episodes feature original music made especially for the series by Nils Petter Molvær and Magne Furuholmen.

The 2-DVD set has all four episodes on disc 1 (without English subtitles), while disc 2 includes a 50-minute summary of the series in English.

The DVD can be ordered from online shops such as Platekompaniet.no (only ships within Norway) and NordicDVD.com (worldwide shipping).

Nils Petter Molvær and Magne previously collaborated on the “Meltdown” concerts at Lillehammer in 2004. Molvær also played trumpet on Magne’s solo album Past Perfect Future Tense later that year, while Magne played piano on Molvær’s album er in 2005.

“Initially, our music may seem very different, but when two such musical expressions are forced together, something magic can come out of it“, Molvær has said about working with Magne.

New book details

More details, including the cover image, are now available for the upcoming book Magne Furuholmen – In Transit.

The book is published by Press, has 304 pages and will feature contributions from Ute Meta Bauer, Selene Wendt, Richard Dyer, Octavio Zaya, Henning Kramer Dahl and photographs by Lars Gundersen.

“The book is the first complete presentation of his activities as a visual artist and brings us close to the creative process. This lavish book also includes all the most important artworks, like a Furuholmen “Greatest Hits”. Movie premiere

Heidi and Magne, December 15th

Magne and Heidi attended the premiere of Marius Holst’s new movie Kongen av Bastøy (King of Devil’s Island) last night, at the Colosseum cinema in Oslo.

The movie, which has Stellan Skarsgård and Kristoffer Joner in the leading roles, is based on true events and tells the story of a group of boys in a youth prison on the island Bastøy in 1915. The trailer can be seen on YouTube here.

“We’re looking forward to seeing it“, Magne told Nettavisen as they entered the cinema.

Marius Holst’s previous movies include Ti Kniver i Hjertet (1994) and Øyenstikker (2001), which both featured music composed by Magne and Kjetil Bjerkestrand. Holst also directed the music video for Magne’s song “Dragonfly”, in connection with Øyenstikker.
