Oslo concerts, September 14th/15th

Sentrum Scene, September 15th

The setlist at Morten’s concerts in Oslo this weekend was noticeably different from the standard setlist earlier this year. “Just Believe It”, “Scared Of Heights”, “Forever Not Yours” and “Take On Me” were dropped, and instead replaced by “Wild Seed” (performed live for the first time since the 90s), “Movies”  and “Send Me An Angel” (in a new live arrangement).

To celebrate Morten’s birthday on Friday, the backing band surprised him at the end of the show with Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday”. Martin Halla also came on stage to join them, as you can see in this YouTube clip.

Here is the setlist from Friday’s concert:

September 15th

1. Burn Money Burn
2. I’m The One
3. Keep The Sun Away
4. Crying In The Rain
5. Out Of Blue Comes Green
6. Move To Memphis
7. Los Angeles
8. Wild Seed
9. Lightning
10. When I Reached The Moon
11. We’re Looking For The Whales
12. Movies
13. Foot Of The Mountain
——————–
14. Send Me An Angel
15. Stay On These Roads
16. Spanish Steps
——————–
17. Lay Me Down Tonight
18. A Kind Of Christmas Card
19. Happy Birthday (Stevie Wonder cover)

On Saturday, the setlist was mostly the same, but “Spanish Steps” was performed twice due to technical problems. The set ended with “A Kind Of Christmas Card”.

Check out more YouTube clips from the concerts here.

Another highlight of the weekend was an interesting Q and A session with Harald Wiik, Erik Ljunggren, Dan Sunhordvik and production manager James Maillardet at Sentrum Scene on Saturday. One of the more amusing stories involved getting booked to play a venue called Circus in Novosibirsk, Russia earlier this year – and then arriving in the city and realizing that the venue was an actual circus (complete with lions backstage!).

30th anniversary weekend in Oslo

Fans from a number of countries are gathering in Oslo this weekend, to attend Morten’s solo concerts at Sentrum Scene and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the start of a-ha.

According to the book Så Blåser Det På Jorden (1986), Magne and Paul visited Morten’s home on his birthday, 14th September 1982, to welcome him as the new singer in their band – which is exactly 30 years ago today.

Morten had actually auditioned for the duo a year earlier, in Magne’s basement in the summer of 1981, but an unfortunate misunderstanding put any potential collaboration on hold. After impressing the two of them with his voice, Morten had left his microphone in the basement and said that he would return when he’d had some time to think about the offer to join them.

One day the microphone was suddenly gone, which Magne and Paul interpreted as a blatant refusal to join the band. The truth was, however, that the microphone didn’t actually belong to Morten, and instead its rightful owner had taken the opportunity to collect it.

By June 1982, the misunderstanding had still not been cleared up. But after spending half a year in England without any results, Magne and Paul were so desperate that they decided to swallow their pride and contact Morten once again. Morten was reluctant and decided to go on a vacation to Greece while considering the offer.

Luckily, he finally agreed to join the two others – and 14th September 1982 is the day a-ha was born (although the band name would arrive a bit later).

English book cover

Anyway…the full schedule of this weekend’s events, with the fan party, exhibitions, guest speakers and more can be found on a-ha.com. Fans who have pre-ordered the a-ha photo book should note that the pick-up and signing at Sentrum Scene is taking place today, Friday, between 14:00 and 18:00, instead of Saturday.

In connection with the photo book, Morten and Stian Andersen will appear at Oslo Book Festival tomorrow at 15:45, where they will be interviewed by music journalist Asbjørn Slettemark.

There is also another a-ha book being published this weekend; the English translation of Larissa Bendel’s “Hunting High and Low”-book from last year.

“a-ha’s “Hunting High And Low” is a piece of Norwegian history – the story of three young hungry musicians in London, sky-high ambitions and several ground-breaking videos. Larissa Bendel from Germany played an important part in a-ha’s international fan club in Germany and gives a unique perspective on the band, both how she witnessed their adventure as a teenage fan and how she today is reading the band’s music as an established academic, supplemented by the band members’ own comments”, the publisher Falck Forlag says in a press release.

The 104-page book will be available for sale at Sentrum Scene this weekend and can also be ordered online here.

Morten’s next single: “I’m The One”

Single cover

Morten’s next single from Out Of My Hands will be “I’m The One”, according to hr-online.de.

The song was already made available as a radio promo in the UK earlier this summer, but will now get a proper single release in Germany.

The release date is October 26th, but whether it will be available as a CD single or download only is not yet known.

Like on the album and first single, the cover photo was taken by photographer Just Loomis.

a-ha to be awarded The Royal Order of St. Olav

Order of St. Olav, Knight First Class

His Majesty King Harald of Norway has decided that the members of a-ha will be appointed Knights First Class of the Royal Order of St. Olav, after a proposition by Music Export Norway.

This was announced in a press release today:

“The Norwegian Royal Order of St. Olav is awarded for distinguished services for Norway and mankind. Each of the three members of a-ha, Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy will, after a proposition by Music Export Norway, receive this Royal Order for their outstanding musical contribution.”

The full press release is available in English at musicexportnorway.no.

“Magne, Morten and Paul are very honoured to be awarded the Order of St. Olav”, a-ha manager Harald Wiik tells Dagbladet.

The official ceremony will take place in Oslo on November 6th.

Other Norwegian musicians who have received the same honour in the past include Jahn Teigen, Åge Aleksandersen, Sissel Kyrkjebø, Jan Garbarek and Truls Mørk.

a-ha photo exhibition in Oslo

To coincide with the upcoming release of Stian Andersen’s a-ha photo book, there will be a sales exhibition of some of his photos at the Stolper + Friends gallery in Oslo, opening this Thursday, August 30th.

Here’s some info from the gallery:

Book cover

“Stolper + Friends is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by acclaimed music photographer Stian Andersen.

The photographs, documenting both intimate and iconic moments during the last 3 a-ha tours, are taken with analogue film camera – apparent in the grainy, atmospheric quality of the images.

The exhibition comprises 19 unseen photographs from Stian Andersens forthcoming book, a-ha: 1994 – 2010: Photographs, to be launched in September.”

The large photos are available for purchase, each in a limited edition of 5 copies.

The exhibition will be open until September 16th, giving those who are going to Oslo for the 30th Anniversary weekend next month a chance to see it as well.

The pre-sale of the limited edition photo book ends on Saturday, September 1st. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible to order the book for several days now, due to technical problems with PayPal. The book is not sold out yet, so hopefully the problems will be fixed soon. Update: the PayPal problems have now been solved, and the pre-sale is working again!

In addition to 200 photos, the book includes a foreword by Magne and an interview with the guys, done by music journalist Morten Ståle Nilsen.

More info in a new 2-part interview with Stian on a-ha.com: Part 1   Part 2

Update 2: Additional interviews with Stian, in Norwegian, have now been published at foto.no and nrk.no.

Morten to receive Green Music Award

Picture from BILD

Morten is set to attend the fifth annual Clean Tech Media Award show in Berlin on September 7th, where he will receive the Green Music Award.

This particular award is presented for the first time this year, and goes to Morten for his long-standing focus on electric cars, renewable energy and protection of the rain forest over the last 25 years.

“As a public figure, I have an opportunity to focus attention on environmental issues and thereby perhaps creating more environmental awareness. The “Green Music Award” is a way of doing that and I am very honored to receive this award”, Morten says in a press release announcing the award.

Jury member Jacob Bilabel says: “With his passionate commitment to electric cars and renewable energy, Morten Harket has shown what environmental protection and clean energy means to him. He also shows a great willingness and persistence to integrate it into his lifestyle. In short, he is a great ambassador for green ideas.”

Morten will also be performing during the award show, which is held at the Tempodrom venue in Berlin.

Magne turns down The Voice offer

Magne was recently approached by TV2, asking him to reprise his role as mentor on a second season of The Voice in Norway.

But he turned down the offer:

“I told them that my obligations were to the talents that I believe in, and that I will try to keep what I promised: doing my best to help them build a career in music.

So it was not an option for me to do another season before I’ve given it a real try. I don’t want to sit there and make promises to new contestants, without having followed through on my plans for the previous ones”, Magne tells Dagbladet.

Fellow The Voice mentor Sondre Lerche has also said he’s not interested in doing another season.

Instead of The Voice, TV2 will air a new season of Norwegian Idol next spring, although the channel claims this had nothing to do with Magne and Sondre’s decision.

Exhibition opening at Vinstra

Magne and Håvard Vikhagen at Vinstra on Wednesday, August 1st
(Picture from Gudbrandsdølen Dagningen)

Magne and Håvard Vikhagen’s joint exhibition, held as part of the annual Peer Gynt culture festival, opened at Vinstra yesterday.

“Magne is a bit like Peer Gynt. They have both had many spectacular experiences and been through a lot”, Vikhagen tells newspaper Gudbrandsdølen Dagningen.

Magne agrees that there are similarities between himself and Ibsen’s iconic character:

“There are several parallels. When I’m juggling many balls in the air, I have a tendency to add even more balls. Both Peer and myself have a lot of life experience. We are also both easily fascinated, while at the same time maintaining a critical attitude. And we want to experience something all the time. But we’re always longing for a place to belong”, he says.

The exhibition at Vinstra includes a selection of works from “Futura Plus”.

“I create art from a musical point of view, where emotions play a large part. I’m not afraid to get involved and be present. Hopefully I’m able to make my art sing. Either way, it’s exciting to be exhibiting together with Håvard”, Magne says.

The Furuholmen/Vikhagen exhibition at Vinstra is entitled “For jeg er født til kunstner, ser du” (a quote by Ibsen) and is open until August 11th.

Magne decorates Røkke’s luxury yacht

Aglaia
(Picture from lars-g.dk)

Over the years, Magne has created artworks for several cruise ships. Now his art can also be seen on a different kind of ship; he has recently decorated the enormous sail of luxury yacht Aglaia, boatinternational.com reports:

“(…) Suitably for a boat named after the Greek goddess of beauty and splendour, Aglaia is also a gorgeous-looking yacht. Chief among her charms is the painting by Norwegian artist Magne Furuholmen on her Code 1 sail, which at about 3,600m2 (both sides of the 1,787m2 Cuben Fiber sail) is one of the largest fabric paintings in the world.

The owners had a series of Furuholmen pieces on board and after the christening chose to make his art a more integral part of Aglaia’s DNA – by putting his work on her sail. Furuholmen was given no specific brief and he told the owner he would make no sketches (‘you’re going to have to trust me’).

‘When I got asked to do this particular commission, I decided to take a modern approach to portrait paintings of 100 years ago,’ Furuholmen says from the deck of Aglaia. ‘It’s my interpretation of a history. I try to find an angle that both has a connection to the context in which the work is going to be placed and a connection to that person whom I’m portraying.’ (…)”

Aglaia is owned by Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke. The controversial business man is supposed to have paid around $100 million for the luxury yacht, which was launched in March 2011. Aglaia also includes art by Magne’s good friend and fellow artist Nico Widerberg.

More pictures of Aglaia, with Magne making a visit onboard, can be seen at photographer Lars Gundersen’s website at lars-g.dk.

Stiklestad opening

Magne with three of his "Borderless" prints
(Picture from Adresseavisen)

Magne’s exhibition at the Leidang gallery at Stiklestad opened last Monday, July 23rd.

Held as part of the Olsokdagene culture festival, the exhibition included a series of new prints based on the word “Borderless” (the theme of this year’s festival is “Across borders”) and a selection of works from “Camera” (2009).

“I always hope that people get inspired and happy when seeing my art. But you never know. Personally I feel that it’s become a nice exhibition and I’m looking forward to seeing the audience reactions”, Magne told NRK.

The exhibition was opened by Knut Olav Åmås, the culture editor at newspaper Aftenposten.

“It’s rare to see an artist who creates so many different things on such a high level. There are some who get provoked by such a multi-talented man, which is understandable when you struggle to achieve even the simplest things yourself”, Åmås said in his speech.

Tech updates

Sennheiser, the company that provides the microphones and IEM systems for Morten’s solo tour, has posted a new press release on their website which goes into detail about the technical setup currently being used.

The press release includes comments from production manager James Maillardet, monitor engineer Kursten Smith and FOH engineer Gerard Albo.

“The key thing for me when working with Morten – and many other artists for that matter – is consistency. Once we have a system in place that works, I am always keen to replicate it as closely as possible everywhere we go. Being able to carry a full Sennheiser microphone kit and IEM system along with our backline means we can easily achieve the consistency that Morten demands”, Maillardet says.

Gerard Albo is Morten’s FOH engineer for the first time on this tour, and follows Sherif El Barbari (a-ha tours 2009-2010) and the legendary Sven Persson (a-ha tours 2000-2008). Kursten Smith has worked with a-ha and Morten since 2009.

The whole press release is available at sennheiser.com.

In other news, Magne has bought his third so-called AX24 system from Danish company Digital Audio Denmark.

“We bought our first DAD AX24 systems in summer 2011 for recording and post-production in our Oslo studio. They feed into an Apple Mac workstation running Avid Pro Tools. We were absolutely thrilled by the transparent and natural sound quality of the AX24. My engineer found it hard to believe the recording could so closely match the experience of hearing the live performance.

The third AX24 is being used for recording live stage performances on location. It is configured with eight high-specification mike preamps which make the system ideal for capturing a wide dynamic range. In my book, it is the best solution around today”, Magne says in a press release posted at digitalaudio.dk.

The press release also includes a few comments from Magne’s assistant Tor Einar Krogtoft-Jensen, who seemed to be the drummer for Apparatjik at Roskilde.

Morten on Starnacht am Wörthersee

Morten on Starnacht am Wörthersee

Morten has been in Klagenfurt, Austria this weekend, to do a playback performance on the TV-show Starnacht am Wörthersee.

Last night he did two songs; “Scared Of Heights” and “Stay On These Roads”. The live show, however, was delayed due to heavy rain. Therefore the actual broadcast was from a dress rehearsal on Friday night.

If you want to see Morten miming on the show, there is a clip on YouTube. There are also a few pictures on Facebook.

Videos from Roskilde and Flø

Magne at Roskilde, July 5th

A video clip with a selection of highlights from last week’s Apparatjik concert at Roskilde is now available at the festival’s website. It includes the following songs:

Do It Myself / Supersonic Sound / Deadbeat / DJ set (snippet) / Shake Him Off (feat. Lowell) / Tell The Babes / Cervux Sequential / Snow Crystals (snippet) / Do It Myself (reprise)

If the whole concert will be available at some point, is not known.

To view the mad spectacle, go to roskilde-festival.dk and click on “Orange Stage 2012: Apparatjik”.

There is also a new video clip of Magne’s “Go With The Flø” opening fanfare last month now up on vimeo.com, courtesy of Sven Voelker.

Interview about Stiklestad exhibition

The newspaper Trønder-Avisa had a 2-page interview with Magne on Saturday, in connection with the upcoming Olsokdagene festival at Stiklestad. As mentioned back in April, Magne is this year’s artist at the annual festival, which opens on July 23rd.

Stiklestad is an historical place in mid-Norway, which represents the introduction of Christianity in Norway, after a major battle in 1030. Magne’s exhibition will include a unique graphic print inspired by the events at Stiklestad.

He is also preparing a series of prints based on the word “Borderless”.

“I like to explore the letters that make up a word, use the letters as architectonic elements, turning words into images. It becomes a new mental landscape, within a given format. It is limited by borders, but still provides a multitude of opportunities.”

In the interview, Magne talks about his fascination with Ulysses and Finnegans Wake by James Joyce, which have been among the inspirations behind his use of fragmented words and sentences that are put together to form new meanings.

“Reading Finnegans Wake is like a swim exercise. You can dive down anywhere and come up with something”, Magne says.

“Joyce was one of the first to express that life is fragmented, instead of linear and continuous. But you will seldom find a place like Stiklestad, which so clearly tells a linear, continuous and influential story as the introduction of Christianity. So how do you go about exploring the subject?”

“The history at Stiklestad is based on one specific perspective, written down in a linear axis of time. But it can also be written more anecdotally. There are conflicting stories in there. Besides, all stories can be written differently, from another philosophic viewpoint, and it’s that other story I’m trying to find, by breaking up the linear narrative, creating contrasts and fractures.”

He finds it interesting that the most beautiful, contemplative, religious room in the world was made by an atheist: the Matisse Chapel in Vence.

“Picasso was angry because Matisse took on the task. Matisse answered that this is what we’re doing, building cathedrals”, Magne says.

The exhibition will be held at Leidangsgalleriet at Stiklestad, and opens on July 23rd.

Mixed reviews for Roskilde concert

Magne Furuholmen and Martin Terefe at Roskilde, July 5th

Apparatjik entered the Orange Stage at Roskilde like this last night, wearing bodybuilder suits, with silver capes and Martin Terefe masks.

“Considering our experience with fame, this is interesting to explore. Martin is the least famous of us. Therefore we’ll all go on stage looking like him tonight”, Magne and Jonas told Dagsavisen in an interview before the concert.

Starting out in silhouette behind four large screens, before moving onto the stage, the band performed songs like “Time Police” and “Do It Myself” for the first half hour. Then DJ Aretïve appeared on top of a cube out amongst the audience, doing a 20-minute set accompanied by the alien fashion show that Magne mentioned in Wednesday’s interview. This was followed by a guest appearance by Lowell, a young Canadian singer who has been working in the studio with Apparatjik lately (more info on that collaboration here). By now, the guys had changed into their combat disco uniforms, and the concert ended with songs like “Tell The Babes” and “Blastlocket”.

Other songs played during the show apparently included “Combat Disco Music” and “That’s The Thing About Us”.

Apparatjik are getting mixed reviews in social media and in the press after last night’s unique performance.

Reactions on Twitter ranged from “who can review this bizarre concert without getting nightmares?” to “the most amazing thing the world has ever seen” to “mega fail”.

Here are some quotes from the various press reviews that have been posted so far:

“One of the most ambitious “concerts” you can imagine. Visually an amazing experience, musically more uneven, but when it worked it was actually really great.”rockfoto.nu

“Something was constantly happening on and around the stage. Furuholmen doesn’t spare any expenses when he invites the audience to party – and it was fun while it lasted. It was generous and playful, but unfortunately also easily forgotten.”adressa.no

“More circus and show than real content.”gaffa.com (3/6)

“Giving a summary of the events that took place Thursday night on the Orange Stage would take at least a few pages, but describing it as a concert would definitely be an understatement. It was more similar to performance theater or an art installation.”soundvenue.com (3/6)

“Apparatjik’s show was quite spectacular, but too often seemed like a Nintendo game out of control.”gaffa.dk (3/6)

“The spaced-out effects often appeared too messy and incoherent, and rarely contributed to creating the artistic total experience that had been prepared.”undertoner.dk (3/6)

“Apparatjik are known for their unique visual style and well-made music videos. But their music is less fascinating.”politiken.dk (2/6)

Apparatjik ready for Roskilde, planning “spectacular” Oslo performance

Rehearsing for Roskilde last week; Magne, Jonas and Martin (plus Tor Einar Jensen on the drums?)
(Picture posted by Aretiive on Twitter)

Apparatjik are set to perform at Roskilde’s main stage tomorrow night. This will be the first time Magne performs at the festival, previously he’s only been there as a guest.

In an interview with Aftenposten today, Magne says that this will be an opportunity to present Apparatjik’s music to a broader audience than before:

“The Orange Stage at Roskilde is an iconic arena for everyone who’s into music. We see this as an opportunity to further expand on our format. The music has always been a natural part of Apparatjik, but has until now been integrated in an audiovisual language and hasn’t been allowed to play the leading role. This time it will get a more natural main focus.”

“It will be quite a multifaceted performance, in which we want to use the cube in new ways. I think I can say that we have a fair amount of madness planned.”

This will include guest-appearances by fans and new artists who are collaborating with the band.

“We have also entered into a collaboration with the renowned Danish visual artist Tal R, who will create a sort of absurd fashion show/costume parade for tomorrow night. It will be a lovely chaos.”

Magne feels that Apparatjik now are ready to reach a larger audience:

“The music we make isn’t particularly demanding. It has a typical pop-melodic structure and can even be quite catchy at times. The experimental part lies perhaps in the fact that we don’t adapt the material to any existing formats.”

But he admits that he doesn’t like all the music that Apparatjik have created:

“I don’t feel that I necessarily have to like all the music we’re performing. Why do I have to like everything we do? We all have to perform tasks that we are more or less comfortable with here in life.”

Still, they are in the process of opening up a bit more:

“It’s not like we’re going on a strike if someone decides to play our music on the radio, it’s just that we don’t promote our material through normal releases, so the chances of that happening are considerably smaller.”

There will be more Apparatjik concerts later this year, including a big event in Oslo:

“We have been invited to make an installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art [in Oslo] in the autumn, which will be accompanied by a slightly absurd choral work. We are also planning quite a spectacular outdoor performance in the middle of Oslo city at the end of September, which I can’t go into detail about yet”, Magne says.

Apparatjik are scheduled to go on stage at Roskilde late tomorrow night, at 1:00 am. Guy Berryman is on tour with Coldplay in the US at the moment, and won’t able to join the others this time.

Update: In an interview with VG, Magne provides more details about the Oslo concert – which will be free and take place by the Astrup Fearnley Museum at Tjuvholmen on September 29th.

Martin Halla EP now available

CD cover

Release Me – the EP that Martin Halla and Magne recorded at the end of May – was released by Universal Norway on Monday, July 2nd.

It includes new versions of four of the songs from The Voice, plus a cover version of “Dragonfly”.

Tracklist:

1. Release Me (2:36)
2. Hurt (4:07)
3. Take It With Me (3:44)
4. We Found Love (2:39)
5. Dragonfly (2:38)

One would perhaps expect Magne to be credited as producer or musician in the cover, but there is no such info listed, except for songwriting credits.

It does sound like Magne is doing the backing vocals on “Dragonfly”, though.

The CD is now available from platekompaniet.no, and digitally on iTunes, Spotify, Wimp etc.

30-second audio samples can be heard at amazon.de.

Morten on Volle Kanne

Morten was a guest on the ZDF talkshow Volle Kanne this morning, with host Ingo Nommsen.

The 10-minute interview can be seen at zdf.de.

This was followed by an appearance on RTL’s Ultimative Chart Show, to be broadcast at a later date. “Burn Money Burn” was apparently performed on the show.

You can see some pictures taken outside the RTL studio here (courtesy of memorial-beach.de).

Dorsten concert, June 30th

Morten with Karl Oluf Wennerberg, Erik Ljunggren and Dan Sundhordvik in Dorsten

Morten and his band did a 10-song set at the Sommer Open Air event in Dorsten, Germany tonight, in front of a crowd of around 20.000 people. The concert was streamed live online at wdr2.de.

Unfortunately, Morten’s voice was in pretty bad shape. Therefore, the vocals seemed to be playback on some of the songs, particularly evident on Scared Of Heights. A controversial decision for sure, and possibly the first time Morten has ever used recorded vocals at a live concert.

Dorsten, June 30th

Here is the setlist:

1. Burn Money Burn
2. I’m The One
3. Keep The Sun Away
4. Move To Memphis
5. Forever Not Yours
6. Lightning
7. We’re Looking For The Whales
8. Stay On These Roads
9. Scared Of Heights
10. Foot Of The Mountain

The whole concert can be watched again at wdr2.de.

Furuholmen-fanfare fills Flø-festival

Magne in front of the "Desibel" horn (Picture from Studio Hugo Opdal)

Magne opened the third annual “Go With The Flø” art festival with a special fanfare on Sunday, June 24th, performed on “Desibel”, the world’s largest mobile horn, and featuring audio samples of tractors, local cows and workers at a nearby shipyard.

Last month, Magne stated that the bass frequency created by “Desibel” is capable of physically moving a cow. Luckily, no cows were tipped over by the sounds coming from the massive horn, but the fanfare did manage to make a bunch of them run away in panic.

“Hugo [Opdal] asked me if I wanted to turn the sound recordings into music. Which I was happy to do. It’s become a musical interpretation of the area”, Magne told newspaper Vikebladet on Friday.

The fanfare can be heard in this clip on YouTube.

Robyn Hitchcock, Magne and Anne Lise Frøkedal on stage (From YouTube video)

Later on, British musician Robyn Hitchcock played a concert at Vonheim, the local village hall. Magne, along with Anne Lise Frøkedal og Frode Strømstad, joined Hitchcock on stage.

A video from the concert can be seen here.
Around 2000 people found their way to Flø during Sunday’s festival.

“Everything is special at Flø. The village has become a center of experimental behaviour. In my opinion, this is the most tolerant village in Norway. When we arrived with the horn, the locals stood by the road, smiling and waving”, Magne told Sunnmørsposten.

Magne in London with Tini

Magne and Martin Terefe have been doing some recording sessions with Tini Flaat Mykland from The Voice at Kensaltown Studios in London this week.

Yesterday Tini posted a picture from the studio on Twitter. “Incredibly grateful for fantastic session-days”, she writes.

Update on a-ha photo book

Book cover

Photographer Stian Andersen‘s photo book about a-ha, which has been many years in the making, will finally be published in September 2012.

The front cover of the book, which is called a-ha 1994 – 2010 Fotografier, has now been posted on the website of Forlaget Press, along with some info about the project.

“I have never spent so much time on a project before. Making a photo book about a-ha is different than making a photo book about Turbonegro, for example. It’s more closed, there’s more history involved, the backstage area is more protected. While I’ve been working, I have never seen any other photographers or press backstage”, Andersen says.

The book will be published in mid-September, priced at 599 Kroner ($99). There will also be an exhibition of some of Andersen’s a-ha photos at the Stolper+Friends gallery in September.

Update: Catherine at a-ha.com has followed up with some info about the English version of the book, which seems to have a slightly different cover.

Update II: It seems the Norwegian version of the book has been cancelled, so it will only be available in English – as a limited edition. The book can be pre-ordered now from forlagetpress.no.

Morten to perform in Dorsten

Picture from fnp.de

Morten will be one of the artists performing at an open air concert in the city of Dorsten, Germany on June 30th.

He is scheduled to perform a 1-hour set, which will be broadcast live on the radio and streamed online (from what I understand).

The concert is presented by radio station WDR2, and other acts performing include Rea Garvey (singer in the band Reamonn, which supported a-ha on the MEMS Tour) and the Norwegian band Katzenjammer.

The organizers are expecting an audience of 30.000 people, and the concert is free of charge.

To promote the event, WDR2 has posted a video clip where Morten has to answer the questions he’s asked by miming.

The questions are as follows; 1. Your favourite instrument? 2. How proud are you of the new album? 3. Where is the most beautiful place in Norway? 4. How do keep so fit? 5. What do you see in the mirror in the morning? 6. How will your performance in Dorsten be?

The Voice-special on TV2

A one-hour special about the first season of The Voice was shown on TV2 on Saturday, which included a new interview with Martin Halla and Magne, backstage clips and highlights from the show.

Host Øyvind Mund asked Martin why he chose Magne over Sondre Lerche at the first blind audition:

Martin: “I thought about some of the things he’s doing outside of music. He’s doing abstract work in the world of arts, and I’ve been making a lot of abstract music. So I thought we could connect on that level.”

– Has this contest been good for your self confidence?

Martin: “It’s been very good. I do have confidence in what I’m doing, but getting accept for it and being embraced by both the mentors and the people has been an extremely good experience.”

By the end of the interview, Magne was asked what will happen now:

Magne: “We’re going to record an album during the summer/early fall. We have already been in the studio to record an EP. Long days and long nights in the studio; it’s been many years since that was my lifestyle. But it’s incredibly inspiring and there’s a great atmosphere in the studio.”

Martin: “Yes, absolutely.”

– What are your ambitions for Martin?

Magne: “They are unlimited. But then again, I’m never able to limit myself.”

– So you have worldwide ambitions?

Magne: “Yes, that’s what I’ve been saying all along. And if it doesn’t work out, I can at least say that I tried. But I do have lots of contacts in London that have already heard of him, and to some extent listened to him as well. If I decide to bite down on something, my jaw locks – like a pitbull.”

Magne presents Sir Peter Blake exhibition

The renowned British artist Sir Peter Blake is in Norway this week, to hold an exhibition of his works at Magne’s gallery Stolper + Friends in Oslo. The exhibition is called The Oslo Suite and is inspired by Norway and famous Norwegians.

Blake has also covered the nearby Shed 13 warehouse with his art, like Damien Hirst did last year.

Yesterday he met the press together with Magne to talk about these projects.

“I think it’s amazing that we have been fortunate enough to have Peter make a whole exhibition based on Norwegian characters, on Norwegian historical figures. And inspired by Norway. I think we should count ourselves very lucky to have Peter here and to have this exhibition happen”, Magne told NRK1’s evening news last night. There’s a video clip here (starts at 12:30).

In addition to prints depicting Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, Sonja Henie and Edvard Munch, Blake has also included a print based on a live photo of a-ha from the 80s, taken by Janne Møller-Hansen.

“When I was asked to hold an exhibition here, I wanted to base it on pictures of famous Norwegian people. And since I’m a good friend of Magne, I wanted to include a-ha as well”, Blake tells Dagsavisen.

Magne was perhaps slightly less amused.

“For me it’s difficult to hang a picture of myself on the wall, but this is a choice that he’s made. Based on which Norwegians he’s familiar with. My entire budget for this year’s Christmas presents has now been spent on buying two prints for Morten and Paul”, Magne jokes.

The Oslo Suite opens at Stolper + Friends tonight and will be on display until July 1st.

George Marino dies

George Marino

Legendary mastering engineer George Marino passed away yesterday. During his almost 40-year long career at the Sterling Sound studio in New York he mastered hundreds of albums, including some of the most classic albums in modern music history.

a-ha fans will know him as the man who mastered Lifelines (2002), How Can I Sleep With Your Voice In My Head – a-ha Live (2003) and Analogue (2005). He also mastered the Savoy albums Reasons To Stay Indoors (2001) and Savoy Songbook Vol. 1 (2007), and Magne’s solo album Past Perfect Future Tense (2004).

“Today Sterling Sound and the music industry as a whole has suffered a tremendous loss. Senior Mastering Engineer George Marino lost his battle with cancer this morning. Words cannot express the sorrow we feel. George was family to us all and we will miss him dearly”, the studio said in a statement.

Roskilde Festival update

The Roskilde Festival has now announced the date for the Apparatjik concert; Thursday July 5th at 01.00, on the Orange Stage.

“The international super group is currently working on a show that does not resemble anything you have experienced at Roskilde Festival.

With members from a-ha, Coldplay and Mew, the musical backbone is quite solid. A show filled with light-as-helium pop music – but just as much an experiment with the concert form and Orange Stage as a kind of temporary art installation.

The musical cosmonauts in Apparatjik are currently working on an innovative show filled with alluring falsetto vocals, synths and a Scandinavian feel. On a space journey filled with surprising features, Apparatjik will accelerate towards the Milky Way’s outer provinces and blur the distinction between art and concert”, the festival promises in an announcement on its website.
