Magne presents “Futura Plus” at new gallery

Magne at Tjuvholmen in February 2009, working on "Confusion" for Bølgen & Moi.

Magne, Hugo Opdal and Paul Stolper have decided to open a new art gallery at Tjuvholmen in Oslo, Hugo Opdal announced in a press release today.

The gallery will be called “Stolper + Friends” and is set to open on September 1st with Magne’s new solo exhibition entitled “Futura Plus”.

“Stolper + Friends” will focus on artists from Norway and the UK, according to the press release.

Tjuvholmen is the same area where Magne decorated a new Bølgen & Moi Restaurant in early 2009.

Apparatjik to perform in Austria

Apparatjik have announced that they are playing a concert at the Steirischer Herbst Festival of new art in Graz, Austria on October 15th.

The festival’s website is available in English here.

Magne is also planning new solo exhibitions this fall. At the workshop in Halle last month he told a fan that there will be an exhibition in Oslo, followed by one in London. Sometime between September and November, but the exact dates had not been set.

The retrospective art book Magne Furuholmen – In Transit, which was originally to be published on May 31st, now has September 6th as a new publication date (in Norway) – possibly to coincide with the upcoming exhibition.

LiveIN magazine interview

Magne is interviewed in the spring 2011 edition of the free trend magazine LiveIN Asker, where he talks about moving into his new atelier at Galleri Trafo:

From having my own atelier at home at Nesøya and being able to use it whenever I want, it’s obviously a transition moving into Galleri Trafo. But my hope is that Trafo will be a dynamic and active place to be, with lots of exciting art projects in every corner of the building.

Magne has rented two rooms in the gallery. One will be his private atelier and working space, while the second room will be used for other activities of his choosing.

I’m planning to involve other artists through collaborations or joint projects eventually. It was very inspiring to visit Olafur Eliasson in Berlin recently, and see how he has organized his “Institut Für Raumexperimente”. A school operating as a workshop, where he collaborates with students and artists on different projects, and which is also used as a forum for exchanging ideas from different viewpoints.

Asked how 2011 is shaping up to be, Magne says:

Much more hectic than I had thought, but according to my wife that’s something I’ve been saying every year since we got together in 1980.

Magne donates artwork to charity auction

Aftenposten has an interview with Magne today, in connection with a new campaign by LHL (The Norwegian Heart and Lung Patient Organization). He is among a number of artists who have donated artworks for an online auction to benefit research on heart disease among women.

Magne himself has been suffering from atrial fibrillation for a number of years, and is scheduled to undergo heart surgery this summer.

So it’s natural for me to contribute to a campaign like this“, he says.

Magne has recently been busy moving into his new atelier at Galleri Trafo in Asker, and in the process he’s had a chance to go through a lot of his older paintings, graphic prints and ceramic art.

The monotype that he’s donated to the charity auction is from a series of prints that he made around 2000, where the motif somewhat resembles a heart against a background of electrical charges.

Shortly afterwards I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation“, Magne says.

It was almost a bit eerie. These prints were made right before my own heart problems were discovered. Yes, it does resemble a heart muscle. I had, perhaps, an underlying feeling in my body, which caused this to materialize.

The monotypes were exhibited only once, but were not available to buy. Now Magne has brought them out of storage.

This print does fit very well, considering my personal connection to heart problems“, he says.

The charity auction is now underway at the website of auction house Blomquist. Magne’s monotype is available here, with a starting price of 30 000 kroner. The auction is open until February 28th.

Planning new book

Dagbladet presents a list of some of the upcoming books to be published in Norway in spring 2011. It includes Magne Furuholmen – in transit, which is described as “a presentation of his activities as a visual artist”.

Magne’s previous art books/catalogues include Kutt (1995), Lerkrukker & Glasbilleder (2002), Foci (2004), Payne’s Gray (2004) and Monologues (2007). He has also illustrated Henning Kramer Dahl’s poetry books Blue Note Boulevards (1997) and Stjerneskutt (2004).

More details about the book and publishing date is not yet available.

In other news, Budstikka reports that Magne has signed a three-year contract to rent parts of the second floor at Galleri Trafo in Asker. This is the same gallery where he held his “Monologues” and “Camera”-exhibitions in 2007 and 2009, and Magne is reportedly planning to use the space as a new atelier and for further exhibitions.

New exhibitions

A Magne F exhibition of 30 graphic prints, probably Alpha Beta, will be held at Galleri Elsa in Namsos from 24 April to 21 May.

We have been in a dialogue for a while, and it finally worked out. It’s always fun to get someone who hasn’t exhibited here before. It will be interesting for both the audience and the artist, and I’m really looking forward to it“, gallery owner Elsa Elden tells Namdalsavisa.

Magne will also be exhibiting as part of the annual Soddjazz Festival at Inderøy, which is held between 28 April and 2 May. He’s been named this year’s festival artist and Alpha Beta will be on display at Nils Aas Kunstverksted.

It’s not known if Magne will be able to visit Namsos and Inderøy himself.

There’s a video clip from this event on mirror.co.uk, where Magne reveals that he is working on a new art book:

Right now I’ve come off a couple of exhibitions in Scandinavia and I’m also working on a book of my artworks that will be published later this year. And between [I’m] doing rehearsals for the final a-ha tour, which is due to start in the beginning of March“.

He also recalls working as an assistant at the Henie-Onstad Art Centre as a teenager, where he had the chance to meet artists like David Hockney and Yoko Ono.

There is also another short video clip from Edinburgh here.

On Thursday Magne was back in Oslo to attend the annual by:Larm music festival/conference, where Dagbladet observed him enjoying a concert by the Danish band Oh No Ono.

a-ha on stage inside the Prinzregententheater in Munich yesterday evening

a-ha made their first appearance this year when they did a playback performance of “Nothing Is Keeping You Here” at the Bavarian movie awards in Munich last night.

Even though it was only playback, they were joined by Karl and Erik on drums and bass. The performance can be seen on YouTube here.

The official site has now confirmed a concert in Brussels, Belgium on 11 October. The four remaining concerts in Brazil were also finally confirmed. Visit a-ha.com for ticket details.

Magne’s “Alpha Beta” exhibition is opening at the Edinburgh Printmakers gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland today.

According to the gallery’s website, Magne will be present for an “artist talk” between 4.30-5.30pm, where he will discuss his artworks with Paul Stolper. And between 6-8pm people can “join Magne F for an exclusive reception to celebrate his exhibition”.

Update (Jan. 20): Although the exhibition opened on January 16th, the “artist talk” and “exclusive reception” with Magne won’t happen before February 17th. A PDF flyer for this event can be seen here.

Tonight is the second semi-final of the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix (Eurovision Song Contest), where Morten’s daughter Tomine will perform the song “Be Good To Me”.

Because of a-ha’s trip to Germany, Morten won’t be able to be part of the audience in Bodø, where the show is held. And that is one of the reasons why Tomine wants to make it to the final. “I have to make it to the next round so my father gets a chance to see me on stage“, Tomine told VG a few days ago.

Tomine can be proud of the beautiful song she will be performing. And Grand Prix is a great arena in which to present it“, Morten says in today’s VG.

The show can be seen live on NRK’s web-TV here, starting at 19.55. “Be Good To Me” can already be heard here.

Update: Tomine did a good performance, but did not get enough votes to go to the final.
